| The 12th Word at A&M
While it is true that his father donated a large sum of money, George Bush never attended Texas A&M. (Even his daughter Jenna attended UT.) And sadly, you seemed to blame your soldiers just because of their association with TAMU. That to me, is ignorance. Before you accuse me of being another conservative Aggie, it's important to know that I've always been liberal in thought and lived in Austin for the majority of my life. But I respect and admire my fellow Aggies too much to allow someone to degrade or insult them. We will always have something that the University of Texas will never have, and that is a sense of pride and family that bonds us together. .
New ripening cultures add flavour to low-fat cheese
The Danish ingredients group developed the new cultures to meet rising demand from a growing category of low-fat dairy products. The culture blends - CR-530 and CR-550 - work by speeding up the breakdown of compounds during the cheese ripening process that typically cause a bitter taste in low-fat cheeses. In full-fat cheeses, the taste of these compounds are masked by the fat, explained Nanna Borne, marketing manager at the firm's Cheese Cultures division."One of the big problems with making low-fat cheese has been the bitterness," she told FoodNavigator.com. "You can taste the broken down peptides and amino acids.""The new ripening blends speed up the process so that the compounds are already broken down to something you no longer taste."The cultures are included in Chr Hansen's Flavor Control CR-500 series and targeted at producers of low-fat variants of traditional yellow cheese with high moisture content, such as Continental, Gouda and Cheddar cheese.

Hockey wives and abortion
They have cute websites designed to appeal to teenage girls, lots of advice about boys — giggle — and sites on MySpace. They take great care to look like kindly counselling centres. In fact, they exist solely to prevent abortion. Planned Parenthood told me it frequently talks to women who went to these apparently welcoming places for counselling on the three options — abortion, adoption and parenting. The group says women report feeling badly treated. Charity's rewards The problem is worse than just some hockey fans inadvertently donating to a cause they may oppose — that is a personal issue between a fan and her team (in my case, the Canadiens). What irks is that our tax dollars are involved. The raffle money is channelled through the Sens Foundation, the team's registered charity arm, which is matching every dollar raised by The Better Halves.

Malware writers exploring Software as a Service model
The business of writing, buying, and selling malware has become increasingly commercial over the past few years, but a new report from online security firm Finjan sheds light on just how mainstream the crimeware business has gone. Earlier this month, the company discovered a small, standalone application gathering data on over 8,700 servers, including web sites from 2,500 North American companies and a handful of sites in Alexa's top 100 ranking. Potential buyers were able to log into the malicious server hosting the data-gathering service and evaluate any given web site's size and Google Page Rank to decide whether or not the site's FTP information was worth purchasing or not. The concept of Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) is nothing new, but this is the first time anyone has organized the purchase of FTP login credentials, with additional tools available to help a buyer confirm he's making a smart purchase.
Barack Obama - a John Kennedy for our times
It would probably not be in its interest to secure the election of Senator John McCain. Al-Qaeda may be unpredictable, but it would be a mistake for it to interfere in American politics, even if it had the capacity to do so. At the start of the primaries, when all eyes were on Iowa and New Hampshire, Senator Clinton was the frontrunner for the Democratic Party nomination. She had the organisation, she had the money, she had the name recognition, she had the professionalism; she even had Bill Clinton, even if he is something of an unguided missile. But those days are now long ago. Senator Clinton has fallen behind Senator Obama in almost all of these factors, except for Bill Clinton's support. Senator Obama has captured the public's imagination, and gone ahead in the polls, but he also has more money, a better organisation and valuable endorsements from all sectors of the Democratic spectrum.
Changing the Culture of Philanthropy: a Young Donor's Views
As a growing number of charities and donors raise questions about how traditional philanthropy works, join a discussion with a donor who is trying to transform the process. Holden Karnofsky, 26, left the hedge-fund industry to start GiveWell, an organization devoted to evaluating charities, as well as the Clear Fund -- a philanthropy he calls "the world's first transparent grant maker" -- to demonstrate how he and his colleagues think foundations should operate. The Clear Fund, now in the process of awarding about $140,000 in grants, asks its grant applicants to provide hard evidence that they are effective. It publishes its assessment of that evidence on the GiveWell Web site, whether it decides the group is worthy of support or not. He will be available online to answer questions from Chronicle readers about the culture of foundations, the new generation of philanthropists, the value of charity-rating services, and his own efforts to create a new type of grant maker.
