Michael Pointer: Purdue Q&A

Question: When will the Purdue quarterback actually look off his primary receiver and go through his progressions? From what I saw Saturday, come-heck-or-high-water, Curtis Painter is going to throw to his primary, even if there is a crowd. And, on two of those interceptions, no Boiler receiver was in the area. I haven't seen anyone say that a receiver zigged when he should have zagged. Were those interceptions all on Painter? Quotes from coaches and Painter seem to suggest so. (Mike from Kokomo)

Answer: Mike, I have covered four quarterbacks since I've been on the Purdue beat: Brandon Hance, Kyle Orton, Brandon Kirsch and Painter. (I missed having the pleasure of covering Drew Brees.) I heard that complaint about everyone of them, including Orton, who had 31 touchdown passes and just five interceptions as a starter.

Conster Nation

STON, S.C. -- Ken Lay died last week.

Huzzah. Huzzah.

There are some dead who don't deserve respect.

If I had a chariot I'd tie his lifeless corpse to the back and drag him through the streets of Houston - slowly enough to let every one of his former employees spit on him - before towing his worthless carcass to the middle of what was Enron Field where he'd fry on a pyre of worthless stock certificates.

And that would be too good for him.

I wanted him to rot in prison for thirty years.

I wanted him to live a life far worse than the life he forced on thousands of his employees; decent hardworking folks whom he stuck with shares of a company that was as hollow as he was immoral, shares that he forced them to keep even as he dumped his and made millions.

Tax Rebates Offer Opportunity to Clean Out Bad Habits

Taking the time to identify your current life state can help in this first step. If you are just starting out, you may have student loans and are adjusting to living on your own. If you are thinking about your children's future, you may be investing in a savings plan for college. The values you outline will lead you to your priorities in life. And your priorities can be shaped into specific goals.

"Outlining the financial goals that are important to you only increases your chances of achieving them," Spiker said. "Most Americans will just spend the tax rebates instead of contemplating where the additional money fits into the bigger financial picture. Just like you clean out your closet, this tax rebate gives Americans an opportunity to put those bad spending habits behind them and start fresh."

Take the tax refund as an example.

Ohmigod! Social networkers just can't take it any more!

General Social networking

Guest post: Chris Matyszczyk parses the latest numbers from ComScore on social network activity.

While looking for something that amused me and stopped me from replying to the likeness quiz invitation (and seventy others) from lonely Japanese friends on Facebook, I stumbled upon some numbers from ComScore via Creative Capital.

They seem to suggest that social networking might have suffered something of a peak. Since October, MySpace seems to have lost 3 million unique visitors. And while Facebook's numbers still appear to be going up, they're creeping rather than leaping.

African violet wins popularity contest

This plant soon became a popular house plant in Germany and other European countries but it did not come to North America until 1926. The California firm of Armacost and Royston imported seeds in 1926 from British and German greenhouses that were known for African violets. Their work led the way for the development of strains and hybrids suitable for home gardening. Today, the African violet is considered the world's most popular house plant and they are a $30 million a year industry.

But back to the seeds. According to Dorothy Parker Adams, "It all started with a package of 100 seeds." The 100 African violet seeds grew into 134 plants, and as they say, the rest is history. .

The hottest new cruise ships for 2008

Because mega cruise ships are homogenous in so many areas—from their multiple mall-like restaurants to the pre-fab cabins, giant playrooms and sprawling spas—cruise lines strive to differentiate themselves in any way they can. But what makes a new cruise ship ink-worthy? It's not enough to be adrenaline-pumping and ear-splitting; they need a weird factor to turn our heads. These days, many cruise lines aim to make waves—and grab market share—with outlandish gimmicks.

But who says gimmicks can't be fun?

Celebrity's upcoming Solstice, for instance, has a patch of grass on an upper deck for picnicking, golf putting and croquet. If that's too snoresville for you, experts lead glass-blowing demos nearby. Fluted goblets anyone? Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas has a surfing simulator that shoots out 20-mile-an-hour waves.

New York Times Goes to Great Lengths to Discredit 'Splendor'

It also presented an extremely inaccurate picture of the audience response to the show itself, focusing on the specific group chased down for interviews.

The article periodically dropped in negative comments the reporters had collected, including one from a Chinese man simply named "Steven" and another from a Chinese immigrant from Dallas who was unnamed.

Charlotte company moving? Rumors flow

State and Charlotte-area business recruiters are working on a huge project.

No, seriously. The code name is "Project Huge."

And the incentives could earn a similar description.

Nobody will name the company, but it involves a 105-year-old Charlotte manufacturer with 477 employees. It wants to build a new plant with new technology and is eyeing a move to Oakboro, a small community about 30 miles east of Charlotte in Stanly County, according to the Golden LEAF Foundation, which Thursday approved a grant to help aid the mystery company's move.

Adding to the intrigue, a Charlotte company that closely fits the description -- Charlotte Pipe and Foundry -- confirmed Thursday that yes, it has bought land recently in Oakboro. But company spokesman Brad Muller said the company, founded in 1901 and employing about 460 workers in Charlotte, often buys land for investment purposes and has no plans to move there.

Barry Bonds' grand jury transcript unsealed

The documents, many with Bonds' name or initials on them, are dated from 2001 through 2003. Prosecutors queried Bonds closely about them, but he denied using the drugs and said he had never seen the documents before.

Steroid screen results

At one point, prosecutor Jeff Nedrow showed Bonds the results of a steroid screen ordered in November 2000 by BALCO's founder, Victor Conte. Nedrow said the tested urine sample belonged to Bonds, and he noted that the report showed Bonds had elevated levels for the injectable steroid nadrolone and for methenolone, a steroid available in both injectable and oral form.

"I got to ask, Mr. Bonds," the prosecutor said. "There's this number on a document with your name ... and it does have these two listed anabolic steroids as testing positive in connection with it.
