And more than ever, it proposes a vision in which data centers are defined not by a computer architecture, be it mainframe or PC server farm, but around the network itself. That makes sense. After all, almost every kind of software is evolving from something that was written for a particular computing platform, into something that is written to be delivered as a service via the Internet. And not static services, either, but ones that can be adapted at a moment's notice on a users' whim—say, by adding a new widget to Facebook, or a new customer order on Salesforce.com. These days, the communication of information—not just the processing of information—is where the action is. Specifically, the company announced the Nexus 7000, its biggest upgrade of the basic corporate network switch since Cisco started selling its now-ubiquitous Catalyst line in the mid-1990s.

Outlook Bleak for Joshua Trees
One of the questions I guess we talk about, at least internally, on an informal basis, is 'What do we have here without Joshua trees?'" says Joe Zarki, a longtime ranger. Joshua trees are a type of yucca that grow 30 feet or taller. The ends of their short branches are covered with clusters of green leaves with spiny tips. An early explorer named John Freemont called it the "most repulsive plant in the vegetable kingdom," Zarki says. "People nowadays, I think, look at it and see this really distinctive, sort of whimsical plant," Zarki says. "I like them. It's a plant with character." Jim Cornett, an independent ecologist who has been studying Joshua trees for almost 20 years, doesn't buy Ken Cole's grim prediction about the trees disappearing from the park.

But none of that takes away from the fact that this is still an absorbing movie with an intriguing premise. Hume's cherished son is brutally murdered at a petrol station - the innocent victim of a gangland initiation killing. The family is shattered - but even more so when it emerges that the correct legal channels offer almost no hope of justice. And that's when Hume (Kevin Bacon) opts out and decides to take the law into his own hands... a big, big mistake. In exacting revenge, he unwittingly declares war on the whole gang, at which point not even the police can help him. But just when the tension is at its height, director Wan misses a trick. There's an obvious moment when the film should have ended - and it would have been a great ending. Instead, Wan carries on for 20 minutes of bloodbath - a decision which soon dissipates most of the interest.
Wikia Search to offer first peek next week
Wikia Search, a community-driven search engine, will get its first public preview on Monday, according to co-founder Jimmy Wales. In an e-mail sent to the Wikia Search mailing list on December 24, Wales wrote that he aims to make the initial version of the search tool available in alpha form. "We want to run over the system with help from people to complain about what is broken," he wrote. Wikia Search, which aims to allow people to contribute to how pages are ranked and to edit search results, will have open-source search algorithms and application program interfaces. The search platform includes the Grub search project, acquired by Wikia in July, which employs user-donated distributed processing power to crawl the Web. Wales, who also co-founded user-generated online encyclopedia Wikipedia, hopes Wikia Search will eventually rival other search companies by making the way in which search results are arrived at more "transparent." "The desire to collaborate and support a transparent and open platform for search is clearly deeply exciting to both open source and businesses," Wales said in a statement in July.
On the blog now:
In the first flush of her California victory, it seemed Clinton had a clear path to the nomination. But the picture looks different on closer examination a day later. While she was winning the dwellings of America's elite, Obama was sweeping everyplace else - Utah, Idaho, Minnesota, Illinois, North Dakota, Kansas and Colorado, many of them states with virtually no black population. And his success in Missouri, Alabama and Georgia show that he continues to dominate Southern states with their large minority populations. Why is Clinton doing so poorly in the heartland? There, away from the liberal media and establishment bias and from the coastal immigrant and Latino concentrations, she seems at a loss. Aside from her core white-women constituency, these voters are really supporting the memory of Bill's presidency more than the prospect of a Hillary administration.
Essay: A more casual approach to the bottom line
Back in my younger days, I had a pretty basic arrangement where money was concerned: Every week I'd earn a little bit of it and, just as regularly, through various transactions, it would end up in the hands of other people. All very simple and straightforward. There was no need for any smooth-talking advisers, helpful booklets, or weekend seminars designed to show me how a property investment in some emerging backwater could be the key to my long-term financial security. But then marriage and a child came along, and suddenly it was important that there was enough money tucked away for a rainy day and maybe even a week in the sun, as well. Pension plans and retirement funds became hot topics, instead of being a conversational fallback. And to top it all off? Thanks to the global economy, those of us within a slightly graying demographic now have international finance to worry about – which, as far as I understand it, involves prime lending rates, the price of various commodities, and the cost of a barrel of oil.

Analysts still bullish on S.A. commercial real estate market Web Posted: 03/06/2008 08:30 PM CST By Creighton A. Welch and Melissa Monroe Express-News Business Writers Experts in San Antonio's real estate market remain cautiously optimistic about commercial prospects around the city. Six panelists discussed the pros and cons of the market Thursday at a Commercial Real Estate Women's forum at the Convention Center. "We will never be the sexiest kid on the block," said Mark Granados, managing partner with HPI Real Estate Services & Investments. But he added that San Antonio still has a lot in its favor, such as several job-growth industries. In North Central San Antonio, big things are continuing to happen with Park North, the 1-million-square-foot Central Park Mall redevelopment project led by HPI.
