Economic gurus: Counseling the candidates

The first thing the economics adviser brings to any campaign staff is a hip coolness and bling," he wrote in the New York Times Freakonomics blog. "Economists want to be valued for their minds and respected for their command of policy proposals ... but it just doesn't work that way," he wrote.

Nevertheless, Holtz-Eakin, a former director of the Congressional Budget Office and former chief economist on President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers, is well-respected among deficit hawks for his positions on less-than-hip issues like entitlement reform, for which he's advocated early and often.

In his view, the sooner the long-term shortfalls in Medicare and Social Security are addressed, the better for the economy. Shoring up both programs would involve tough choices when it comes to spending cuts, Holtz-Eakin has said, a route he believes would be more effective than tax increases.

Asus' 8.9″ Eee draws crowds at CeBIT

Here in CeBIT 2008, crowds descended on Hannover Germany to see the latest technologies. Germany is certainly a lovely country but there's nothing lovable about the 5.60 Euro per gallon gas prices.

CeBIT is certainly one of the more unique conventions I've been to since everything is spread out over a square kilometer and it's like going to 10 mini conventions. While you get some outdoor air between the halls, don't expect any fresh air with all the smokers there. The temperature delta certainly makes proper attire a challenge because it's too warm inside and freezing outside.

kf Feels Brad Grey's Pain!

He's so entitled to take this shot: MSNBC's Tucker Carlson, on Dan Abram's reappearance as an anchor (after being promoted to general manager of the network):

Over at CNN Jon Klein runs the show. Do you think he could host an hour of television? How do you think that would rate? Not well. So in the end, we're proud of Dan."

Meanwhile, Klein is still milking respectability points from his decision to end Crossfire, where Carlson once soldiered loyally before being gratuitously humiliated by Klein. Klein gets praised for his "candor." He then says ratings are not that important. "This is, first and foremost, a battle for journalistic excellence." ... P.S.: Marketwatch's fawning inerviewer, Jon Friedman, explains Klein's ratings non-triumph, after almost two years on the job:

CNN most likely won't make any dramatic strides until the U.S.

Roberts: Trouble foretold

Six months ago, an out-of-state minister known for prophecy told Oral Roberts University President Richard Roberts he would go through a "major storm" but would come through it.

The minister also said, "When you enter your 60th year, you'll step to a new level of ministry you've never known," Roberts recalled in an interview with the Tulsa World.

Roberts celebrated his 59th birthday on Monday and then began his 60th year, six weeks after three former ORU professors filed a lawsuit claiming wrongful termination and alleging the Roberts family has misused ORU and Oral Roberts Ministries money and resources for themselves.

Roberts is on a leave of absence as president while ORU's board and independent auditors investigate the allegations. After the investigations, the board will .

Give Until It Works

Only charitable contributions that were completed during the 2007 calendar year may be deducted from your taxable income. Another important caveat is that you need to itemize your deductions. If you opt for this year's standardized deduction, it eliminates the itemized deductions that include things like mortgage interest payments, property taxes, and -- yes -- philanthropy. You also have to make your donation to a qualified charitable organization. Most churches and charities qualify. Spending $3,000 to fund your nephew's band does not. That's important. Donating to a hurricane relief charity that has a valid tax identification number and is a registered, non-profit organization, is deductible, but helping out an affected family directly is not. If you have any doubt about the deductibility of the contribution, Publication 78 -- available from the IRS Web site -- provides a cumulative list of qualified charities and organizations.
