WASHINGTON (AP) -- Employers slashed jobs by 63,000 in February, the most in five years, the starkest sign yet the country is heading dangerously toward recession or is in one already.

The Labor Department's report, released Friday, also showed that the nation's unemployment rate dipped to 4.8 percent as hundreds of thousands of people -- perhaps discouraged by their prospects -- left the civilian labor force. The jobless rate was 4.9 percent in January.

Job losses were widespread, with hefty cuts coming from construction, manufacturing, retailing, financial services and a variety of professional and business services.

McCain seen as Republican choice

If anyone bothers to learn about the rise and fall of the political honeymoon of the just retired ex-President of South Korea, you will be astounded. President Roh was elected in 2002 by astonishing landslide. A relative new comer and novice administrator, Roh was supported mainly by enthusiastic young voters who were dying for "change" of all the old systems and old politics. Roh promised hope for change. They young supporters used all kinds of digital methods to urge each other to vote and spreading the message to all others to go out to vote. He won. The "conservatives" were shocked. He employed lots of so nicknamed "boy scouts" for his inner circle, all wide-eyed idealists who vowed to turn Korea upside down, inside out by trying to make changes. The result was miserable. Roh was even abandoned by his own ruling party which itself split into two different parties.

Safe behind the wheel

We're so new (as) drivers and I just think kids make rash decisions," Emily said. "It's not just about drinking and driving. It's about road rage, speeding, text messaging and not wearing your seat belt."

Their efforts earned them second place in the 2006-07 FBLA state competition and the chance to go to national competition.

And that's where it ended.

Sort of.

This year, Denise Russo, and Hailey Mackin, both 16, have taken the wheel of the CARS project. Last week, the two conducted mandatory assemblies in the school theater for all River Ridge High School students.

Denise and Hailey were understandably nervous when they took to the stage. Not an unusual emotion when some of your peers - perhaps the "invincible" kind - are laughing it up in the back rows.

Buy Amazon - Kindle is the iPod of books

Here are five reasons why the Kindle is the next must-have gadget akin to the iPod.

1. Solves real "problems" for consumers and readers

I have no need to carry around 80 hard cover books with me at a time, let alone 1,000. Sony's dud e-book reader's main benefit: carry around 80 hard cover books at once. I just want to read one book at a time. But sometimes I finish my book and I wish I had one more. Maybe I'm in the mood for something different than what I just finished. Or maybe it was so good I want something else by the same author. Kindle is the first ebook reader with its own cellular wireless connection to let you get new books anytime, almost anywhere when the mood strikes. It's not wifi, you don't need to find hot spots — it's like a cell phone. What about periodicals? I want to get my newspapers and magazines quick.

Band energizes crowd

Incommunicado recently played a Cherry Darling show in February with bands Jena Berlin and The Warmingtons.

"We really like playing in State College, and college towns in general," Warmbrodt said. "If we could, we would play college towns more often, but we just don't have the connections."

Playing with Incommunicado will be Lose The Name, a punk-rock quartet from Tyrone, Pa.

"This is our first time playing with Incommunicado, and we are super happy about it," bass player Brad Davis said.

This weekend's performance coincides with the release of Lose The Name's five-track EP, Fells Point, released through Take Over Digital.

Lose The Name worked with producer Paul Leavitt who has worked with other acts like Senses Fail.

Kandahar governor denies torture claim

There will be little difference rotating out in two years and rotating out now. 1,000 additional troops won't be sufficient to win the day and there is no reason to continue in the Khandahar province without a greater commitment from NATO overall. Our current approach (with 1,000 extra troops) is a recipe for a stalemate at best and failure at worst. Sometimes it takes more courage to know when to quit than it does to continue. Without a much greater commitment by NATO, this is one of those times. Posted 02/02/08 at 1:07 AM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

CBC apologizes for leaving francophone artists out of TV show

Popular Quebec singer Claude Dubois accused the CBC of "racism" after it chopped several Quebec artists from the televised version of Monday's Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame gala in Toronto.

Dubois said the public broadcaster had insulted Quebecers.

CBC executive vice-president Richard Stursberg sent a letter Friday to all artists whose performances were not included in the TV show.

"It was our view that the broadcast, on CBC's English language network and directed at an anglophone audience, should focus on music and musicians most familiar to that audience," Stursberg wrote.

"Upon reflection and based upon the negative reaction to the television broadcast, we acknowledge that we could have done a better job of reflecting the full diversity of the participants."

In the letter, Stursberg says the CBC did not intend to offend "any particular artists by excluding them."

The CBC said Thursday the French performances were among cuts needed to fit the three-hour gala into a 44-minute time slot.

Senior Olympics draw new friends to center

The competition wasn't too fierce among the participants, who meet most weekdays at the center. There, they socialize, play games and share lunch. "It's good for them to make new friends," said Jessica Medina, 17, who volunteered to help with this week's games. Medina is a student at the center who takes classes to earn a GED. The brightly painted center at the corners of Ocotillo Road and 54th Avenue in downtown Glendale has become a gathering place for all ages. It's where seniors gather each morning and where students like Medina take classes. Schoolchildren head there after school and teens hang out in the evenings. Julia Aguilera sank 15 shots in one minute. Asked if she ever played on a basketball team, the 68-year-old replied, "Not yet." That spunky attitude made the Glendale woman a two-time gold-medal winner.
