Music you will love

Some exciting stuff on the music front.

The B-52s album "Funplex" just landed over my transom and I have to say, I'm feeling it. But I'm sort of prejudiced; I've always liked them. I will never forget that party I was at in Manhattan at the Hammerstein Ballroom -- who can remember what it was exactly? -- when the kind sponsors pumped everyone full off free drinks for like two hours and then, surprise...opened the curtains to reveal the B-52s, who put on this incredible, mind-blowing performance complete with stilt walkers and people in inflatable costumes. It was amaaaazing. Anyway the album is cool…rock oriented with touches of electro and punk.

Also, Natasha Bedingfield came out today. (Her album, that is. She did not announce that she is a lesbian.) I was dying to hear the track she did with Norfolk alum Danja (#13) because I was in the studio in LA when they made it. It's called "Not Givin' Up." Watching them collaborate was so cool...for the first 40 minutes.

John Howard's Irving Kristol Lecture

I was here on that fateful September morning in 2001 having, only the previous day, met the President for the very first time. To experience the shock and disbelief of a free and generous people being subjected to an unprovoked and evil attack left me with a feeling which I have retained to this day. The long friendship between Australia and the United States has grown deeper and stronger as we have responded to the threats of these past years. It is a powerful testament in the modern world that the values which unite nations create the most enduring bonds of all. Australia has been beside the United States in every military conflict of consequence in which your country has been involved since our soldiers first fought together at the Battle of Hamel, in France, on 4 July, 1918. Important though that history of military cooperation may be, important though our political, economic and cultural ties might be, they are dwarfed by the commonality of the values that we share.

Voters to decide on third riverboat casino for Baton Rouge

After a multimillion-dollar public relations campaign and questions about whether something new will destroy something old, East Baton Rouge Parish voters decide Saturday whether to allow a third riverboat casino.

In a $250 million plan, Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. wants to bring a boat to Baton Rouge, which, since gambling was legalized in the 1990s, has been a two-casino market.

Online Petitions Trying to Save `FNL'

Another beloved TV show is close to the chopping block. And yet again, its loyal fans are attempting to stave off the execution.

With the writers strike over, a number of shows are in limbo as network executives plot their new schedules. Most notably, the fate of "Friday Night Lights" hangs in the balance.

The hourlong drama, based on the 1990 book by H.G. Bissinger, focuses on a high school football team in Dillon, Texas. It's a deftly written (and elegantly scored) series about a small town in which football is both a blessing and a curse.

For its first season, the Writers Guild Awards nominated it for best drama series. A critic for The New York Times has gushed: "I love `Friday Night Lights.'"

Some reports have suggested NBC wants to bring back "Friday Night Lights," which was in the midst of its second season when the strike halted production.

Protest of huge IT services contract upheld

Bjorklund added that the decision also could put Alliant Small Business at risk if the same selection process were used.

Alliant is a $50 billion, 10-year governmentwide acquisition contract that federal agencies were supposed to begin using in 2007 to buy an array of IT services. Sixty-two companies submitted bids and 29 were selected as service providers on July 31. Following the contract award, eight companies filed protests arguing that the process used to evaluate them was arbitrary and contrary to the law. The protests were then combined under the protest filed by Serco Inc. in federal claims court.

According to the ruling, GSA assigned adjectival (verbal) ratings to each bidder on the basis of numerous technical factors and then converted those descriptive evaluations into whole numbers (3, 4, 5 etc.) that were used to calculate a technical score for each bidder.

Brentford Vs Notts County Preview

The Bees have been in impressive form since Andy Scott took over from Terry Butcher around a month ago, and with four straight wins behind them the Bees have quickly buzzed into mid-table after a dramatic slide towards the foot of the table.

But Notts are also getting back on track with a win and a draw from their last two games, and there have been plenty of positives to build on for Ian McParland who has made some shrewd signings in the January transfer window and also has Mike Edwards back from injury.

Teachers leave Houghton for classrooms on Alaskan island

Literally it is right in the middle, but it's also where people go for their recreation," Nikki Lishinski said.

Movies are shown there. School carnivals are a big draw.

Sometimes, the school has Pizza Hut pizzas flown in for fund-raisers and these command hefty prices.

"People will pay $25 for a pizza, easily," Williams said.

Crowds come out for high school basketball games, too, though the Sea Parrots have to be creative to find opponents so far from the mainland.

"The high school basketball team will play the Coast Guard, they'll play the teachers," Steve Lishinski said.

The big rivalry is with the Seal Pups, the team from St. George.

"The competitive spirit is definitely there," Steve Lishinski said.

GCC has global investment and development magnet promise, says ULI ...

Speaking ahead of this week's ULI conference in Abu Dhabi, Todd Mansfield, the Institute's Chairman, says the world-wide development industry has now woken up to the opportunities the Gulf Co-operation Countries and United Arab Emirates now hold out. 'The rest of the world is absolutely aware of the real estate investment and development potential of the region, which holds enormous promise as a global magnet for investment and development,' said Mansfield. But the ULI Chairman emphasized that the region must embrace sustainable development if it is going to compete on the world stage. 'While every market is different, cities and regions around the globe are sharing growing concerns over sustainability,' said Mansfield. 'These sustainability issues include concerns over managing population growth, responding to demographic changes, building enough affordable housing, improving transportation and other infrastructure, and protecting the environment.

Screencasting Recorder: Upload, Share, Publish, Embed - FreeScreencast ...

This is too good to be true! FreeScreencast is a new free web-based service that allows you to record anything taking place on your screen in a simple way. Not only. FreeScreencast takes care of uploading your recorded clip and provides you immediately with an embed code to post the screencast on your site. This is the first easy, and inexpensive screencasting tool that truly empowers online publishers to create and publish high-quality screencasts on their blog sites with the minimum effort.

The only limitations of this new web-based service are the fact that for now the screen recording tool works only on PC Windows machines, the need to download a few components, and a few rough corners in the UI and management features available for now. But it is reasonable to expect that within a short time these issues will be addressed providing to this service the true popularity and attention it deserves.

Coming soon: Movies on flash memory cards

Getting permission to build a library of high-quality content has been the bane of several would-be Blockbuster killers. Armstrong wouldn't divulge the name of the studios, but said they were major and well-known.

"We will have them (movies) the same day and date as DVD," he said. The pricing will be about the same.

Advantages over current models If the company can pull it off--and that remains a big if--PortoMedia potentially can short-circuit some of the problems and shortcomings of the various methods for delivering movies. First up is cost. Delivering movies via hard drives and flash memory eliminates many of the packaging and shipping expenses associated with DVDs. Shelf space at retailers now dedicated to discs is also freed up for other products.

In addition, selection is improved.

Sun turns to Neil Diamond for Amazon utility 'killer'

Here's Sun Microsystems. Ahead of the curve with utility computing? Check. Interested in gaining the business of today's internet companies? Big check. Full of server-side software skills? Check. Behind Amazon.com of all companies in actually putting these things together as a product or service companies can buy? Yep.

Sun's mysterious failure to address the potentially meaty market for renting a web infrastructure to fledgling businesses appears on course for a correction. The company plans to unveil a project code-named Caroline in the next couple of months, offering a "hosting platform for development and delivery of dynamically scalable Internet-based services".
