Cities, states get 'A' for preparation

In the first report of its kind, U.S. health officials said the nation's states and cities made a strong effort to prepare for a flu pandemic, bioterrorism or other emergency health crisis, but big challenges remain. "I think in terms of effort and progress, an 'A,'" said Dr. Richard Besser of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when asked to assign a letter grade.

"In terms of amount of work to be done, I would say that's absolutely enormous."

It was the government's first assessment of the payoff from its investment of more than $5 billion since the terrorist attacks of 2001 to make the country better prepared for a variety of public health emergencies.

The report looked at the staffing, laboratory capability and other resources of state, local and territorial health departments for handling bioterrorism or other disasters.

Online bullying, suicide raise concerns for parents

At 13, my girlfriends and I passed notes to each other every single day, folded into small triangles with the recipient's name scrawled on the outside panel. Some of them could get pretty ''emo'' to use today's vernacular, but the truth is, we wrote to each other about boys most of the time. We wrote about boys we liked and boys we didn't like. We even wrote about boys we barely knew, just in case one of us heard something about them that just might be worth passing along (perhaps that one of them ''liked'' one of us, for example.)

Once in a while, we even wrote notes to boys. Without revealing too much, let me just say that over the past five years, I've emptied enough boys' pockets on laundry days to know that girls still write notes to boys, still folded into little triangles.

Britney Spears' Driver's-License Case Postponed; Plus Hayden ...

Since Britney Spears isn't in control of her own affairs at the moment, she can't make a plea bargain in her driving-without-a-license case, a Van Nuys, California, judge decided Wednesday (February 20). Spears' attorney for the criminal case told the court that the singer's conservatorship attorneys don't feel she's capable of making an agreement, giving a deposition or signing a declaration at the moment, so Judge T.K. Herman continued the case until March 20. The misdemeanor charge stems from an incident in August in which Spears was videotaped hitting a parked car and leaving the scene without notifying the other driver (the hit-and-run charge was later dropped). Spears was denied visitation rights with her two sons in an unrelated hearing Tuesday. ...

Hayden Panettiere must have absorbed someone's musical powers, because the "Heroes" star is putting out a debut album later this year on Hollywood Records.

Dining, drinking choices reflect SW Valley's diversity

The Super Bowl is behind us and the tens of thousands of visitors who came to Arizona for the excitement have returned to their homes with a positive impression of the Valley. Glendale's success with the Super Bowl affects us all. Another thing that affects all of us is the wonderful diversity of businesses in the Southwest Valley. The Cracker Barrel Restaurant takes patrons back to the days of the old-fashioned country store and family-style restaurant. On your way to be seated, you make your way through the country store where you can find products ranging from candy bars to rocking chairs. The food is homestyle, prepared from scratch in their kitchen. .
