Feb. 14, 1929: Al Capone's .45 Caliber Valentine

1929: The art of the gangland slaying takes a quantum leap when mobsters working for Al Capone use the cutting-edge technology of the day -- the Thompson submachine gun -- to wipe out a rival gang in a garage on Chicago's North Side.

The St. Valentine's Day massacre wasn't the first time a mobster used the Tommy gun in a rub-out, but the slaughter -- seven men were killed -- was unprecedented and therefore shocking, even by jaded Chicago standards.

The massacre was ordered by Capone to wipe out George "Bugs" Moran and his North Side Gang, which was muscling in on Capone's bootlegging operations. The plan was to lure Moran and as many of his men as possible to a garage at 2122 North Clark Street and take care of business there. Although a shipment of smuggled alcohol is usually given as the bait used, what actually brought Moran's men there that night remains unclear.

So you got Drudged? Did you make any money?

A tornado or hurricane rips through your town. Or a crazed gunman opens fire at a nearby school or shopping center. Or an Interstate highway bridge collapses.Whatever, the news in your backyard can suddenly become the focus of public attention all over the nation and world – and the doorway to the big news could be your online newspaper. And for 24 to 48 hours your Web site will become one of the busiest news sites in the world. Your page traffic might increase 10-, 20- or even 100-fold.Sounds wonderful, right? Not necessarily. Some online newspapers, such as the Omaha World-Herald during a recent mall shooting, can’t handle the traffic and suffer embarrassment. But even if all goes well technically, what’s the business proposition for the newspaper that provides the news coverage to the world?"How to monetize windfall Internet traffic" was the subject of a session at the NAA’s annual Marketing conference in late February."Everything happens so fast," said Al Gibes of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "that there’s no real way to sell more advertising.

Free rollerskating at doomed hall

A LOCAL authority is hosting a free day of rollerskating at a doomed leisure facility.

Harrow Council is throwing open the doors to Byron Hall, in Christchurch Avenue, for all-day skating today.

If the council continues with its plans, the hall, along with the iconic 1970s skate park and the existing leisure centre, will be torn down to make way for a new £36million leisure centre.

First Alterman, Then Obama!:

As a state patrolman pushes the governor's Ford hybrid sport utility vehicle toward 90 mph, coaxing it to an unnatural whine, Richardson punches buttons on one of his three cellphones.

He calls an aide and discusses potential fundraising events in April and May with Bill Clinton and Al Gore. Then he dials U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., leaving a message on the Senate minority leader's cellphone about an immigration-reform bill being debated that day: "I don't like this Hagel-Martinez initiative. It's sort of half a loaf. Let's hold fast." [E.A.]

If you want the whole loaf, it looks like Richardson is your guy. ... 7:07 P.M.

Econopundit posits the intriguing exception to the "Fifty-Fifty Forever" Theory:

Modern elections are largely governed by the principle of minimum differentiation which (according to the mean voter theorem) will generally produce a 50-50 split in most polls and elections.
