Your franchise could be at risk
Have you looked at radio-station Web sites lately? Some of them, even in small towns, do a good job of mimicking newspaper Web sites, including newspaper-like photographs of local events as well as daily updates of news, sports and obituaries. The ads look just like the ads on newspaper Web sites, which means those ad dollars are not going to the newspaper.I hate to admit that we were slow in getting our Web site up after my wife and I bought our last newspaper. There was so much to do, a Web site kept getting pushed down our "to-do" list. The wakeup call came when our city government began talking about giving away free business links on the city Web site. That would have made it more difficult for us to sell ads on our Web site. We announced plans for our site in a hurry, and the city, fortunately, dropped its proposal. The fact is that anyone can start a Web site these days for a few hundred bucks, and those newspapers procrastinating about the Internet need to get their own sites up before someone else does, be it a radio station, a chamber of commerce, a tourism group, a high-school journalism class, the computer whiz down the street or some guy you've ticked off with a news story.Your newspaper owns the franchise for news and advertising in your community and probably has done so for 100-150 years.

Britney checked out: Checked out of the hospital that is. The pop-star was released early from UCLA Medical Center's psych ward because a court representative found "no just cause" for the hold, a source tells 'People.' Both her doctor and her parents wanted her to stay the full two weeks, but the decision for Spears’ release was overridden by the court representative. For the people of L.A., watch out – Brit’s back on the roads. Everybody freeze: This is one of the hottest videos on the Internet today, according to Technorati.com. Improv Everywhere, a New York City prankster group, recently asked about 200 people to freeze on cue in Grand Central Station. Check out how other people reacted: 'Project Runway' in 60 Seconds: Missed your favorite designers last night? We got your back.

Dems Should Thank Nader, Not Trash Him
Hillary Clinton blamed Ralph Nader this weekend for Al Gore's 2000 loss to George W. Bush. She's hardly the first to make such a statement, but the comment reveals the patronizing attitudes that still pervade her party. Barack Obama wasn't much nicer, saying Nader "did not know what he was talking about" when he claimed there was no difference between Bush and Gore. But it's Clinton's comments that really got to me: She said categorically that Nader "is responsible for George W. Bush." She's wrong. You know who is "responsible" for Bush being elected? Gore. The Democratic Party. The American public. I first became aware of Nader as a high-school senior in 1996. I didn't get to vote that year - the election was held about five weeks before I turned 18 - but I would have voted for him.

Wolf Pack can't win WAC without help Closing sweep is first task for ...
UNR's quest to win its fifth straight Western Athletic Conference regular-season title is alive. But the Wolf Pack is going to need plenty of help. UNR, 17-10 overall, is third in the WAC at 9-4, a game behind first-place Boise State and a half-game behind second-place New Mexico State. The Wolf Pack's final push begins Thursday when its hosts New Mexico State. Saturday is the final regular-season home game, against last-place Louisiana Tech, and the regular season closes March 8 at Fresno State. To win the conference, UNR probably needs to sweep its final three games and hope Boise State loses two of its last three. The Broncos (10-3) are at San Jose State and Hawaii this week, and no WAC team has swept that trip this season. Boise State ends the season at home against Utah State.
Pumpkin's dad arrested in US
His acquaintances tipped off local authorities after seeing news reports about Xue. "He was arrested in Atlanta,'' Tom Hession, head of the Los Angeles US Marshals, said. "The arrest was based on the news reports and the internet and America's Most Wanted,'' Hession said. "He was either associated with, or staying with some folks, who realised he was wanted and they called authorities.'' The website for the America's Most Wanted television program says Xue was caught after Chinese-American locals recognised him. "According to police, Xue was at an apartment complex when a number of residents noticed him and a fight broke out," the website says. Xue 'hogtied' "Local authorities got wind of the incident and arrived on the scene only to find the suspected murderer hogtied and detained by a number of men." Hession said authorities hoped to be able to deport Xue back to New Zealand soon.

First, Step Up
With no money and no organization, seven of us launched StepItUp in January 2007. Before the year was out, we'd helped organize 2,000 demonstrations in all 50 states-and helped take our once-radical demand for an 80 percent reduction in U.S. carbon emissions by mid-century into the halls of power. We haven't won yet-but we're way beyond what we could have expected when we began. Last November, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stood at a podium in front of 7,000 college students gathered from around the country at the University of Maryland and led them in a chant: "80 percent by 2050." I'm as cynical as the next guy, but it feels like our democracy is starting to work. It will need to work much better, though. We'll need to see a whole new level of commitment-to nonviolent protest, to electioneering, to endless lobbying.
