Toy retailer entertains web upgrade
Independent toy retailer The Entertainer has completed a website refresh and contracted ecommerce specialist Escalate Retail to provide a software suite for the back-end. The implementation cost just over 400,000, including overall hosting, development and license costs, in the first year but since the system went live in October 2007, one of the retailer's sites, thetoyshop.com, has increased sales by 147 per cent, according to The Entertainer's online marketing and ecommerce manager Richard Bewley. silicon.com Retail & Leisure Get the latest retail and leisure news straight to your inbox. Viewer Comments On Gun Control
Because the State of Illinois in its infinite wisdom has denied me the right to carry a firearm to protect myself, I might be killed. Not a situation I would wish on ANYONE. Thank you for asking for opinions on gun control. Sincerely, Jeff Clauss, ChicagoHow many more wake up calls do we need until law makers realize that some new, strict gun control laws need to be passed? How about a much longer waiting period? One, two, maybe even three months? How about a limit on the number of guns a person can have, say, two? How about more detailed background checks? If you've ever been admitted into a mental hospital, suffer from depression, ever been charged with assault, etc. then no guns for you, period. How about anybody found with a gun that isn't registered to them automatically serves a day or two or a week in jail along with a massive fine? Maybe make them as expensive as a car? Make certain guns cost $10,000 dollars and the bullets cost a premium as well.
Canadians catch Black Friday fever
It's the unofficial launch of the Christmas shopping season in the United States - their equivalent of Boxing Day, only everybody's still got money and stamina. Black Friday is THE day to get a deal. Many retailers open their doors early and don't close until late at night - offering extra incentives to bleary-eyed early birds who start lining up long before the crack of dawn, ready to jostle, shove and race for limited quantities of drastically reduced items, especially clothing, electronics and toys. .
If not perfect, campaign at least has been magnificent
He clearly implied that odds were that Obama would not run "a perfect campaign." And this week Emanuel was proved right. When Obama, after 12 victories in a row (including Tuesday's win in Vermont), stumbled in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, he allowed Clinton back into the race. By adding Texas and Ohio to her previous wins in California, New York and New Jersey, Clinton strengthened her argument to the superdelegates who ultimately may decide the contest that she is the stronger bet in the big states that are key to Democratic victories in November. The most striking thing in the exit polls was Clinton's success with the late deciders in both big states. Among the one-fifth of the voters who told exit polls they made their decision during the past three days, Clinton led by 21 points in Texas and 18 points in Ohio.
Update: Library Has 10 Copies of "Water for Elephants"
No Zags: Candidate endorsement is one of the most antiquated and soon-to-be-extinct functions of the newspaper industry. In a world where anybody can publish any opinion they want and anyone can read it, it seems pretty silly that the "wise old minds" of an editorial board still feel the need to put a newspaper's stamp of approval on a political position. Endorsements are relics of the old-journalism past, as are editorials. Question: I'm curious about the last sentence of No Zags' comment. Are editorials, indeed, relics. Or are the still important contributions to the public dialogue -- and help form community opinion? .
I'm hungry
Several nights each week I can be found working in my garage making nice boards into unusable scraps. Occasionally, with a lot of help from glue and nails something takes shape. Along the way I snort and eat copious amounts of saw dust and get many cuts and scrapes. This isn't the case with Marthaller, his stuff is great.
He starts with something ugly - a wood burl. If I were cutting down a tree burl would be the first piece into the fire pit. His burls are exceptionally ugly. If you're reading Duey - you heard me - you have ugly burls. They are covered with moss and bark and overall look as though they could use a bath.
After Marthaller hacks the 60-pound chunk of ugly down to a manageable size he chucks it into his 800-pound lathe and starts it slowly.
