Toy retailer entertains web upgrade

Independent toy retailer The Entertainer has completed a website refresh and contracted ecommerce specialist Escalate Retail to provide a software suite for the back-end.

The implementation cost just over 400,000, including overall hosting, development and license costs, in the first year but since the system went live in October 2007, one of the retailer's sites, thetoyshop.com, has increased sales by 147 per cent, according to The Entertainer's online marketing and ecommerce manager Richard Bewley.

The system replaces a bespoke implementation made before thetoyshop.com and The Entertainer's other brand Gadgetshop were acquired, which was deemed too inflexible to be able to cope with the peaks and troughs of traffic.

Today's News:

Pressure has been mounting on all parties as the Dallas Cowboys' Nov. 29 matchup with the Green Bay Packers approaches. The game will only be shown on the NFL Network.

"I've had a lot more people contact me about NFL football the last two months instead of child protective services, windstorm insurance or worker's compensation, which are frankly more important issues," said Rep. Corbin Van Arsdale, R-Tomball. "I don't control what constituents call me about."

The NFL Network wants to be placed on digital basic cable with all customers paying about 60 to 70 cents a month for it. Time Warner wants to offer the network on a surcharged sports tier available to subscribers who pay extra for it.

The network has rejected Time Warner's offer to let the network charge a fee for the games that would be passed on to customers.

Make My Day

Did it commit identity theft and buy thousands of dollars of electronics?

We'll probably never know, because Meckler's lawsuit conveniently does not say what injuries she suffered, other than unspecified "internal and external" ones. So that makes one wonder what she'll use the $50,000 for? Hours of physical therapy? Deep psychological counseling to help her overcome her fear of small woodland creatures? A credit counselor to restore her credit score?

And why would she blame the mall? How does a squirrel, who woke up one morning and found that his home had been replaced by a Cinnabon, become the responsibility of the Old Orchard Mall?

According to the suit, it's because mall personnel "were aware of the longtime presence of said squirrel on the premises and allowed the squirrel to remain on the premises, despite the fact that the squirrel had previously attacked and harassed other customers, a fact known to Westfield."

Ignoring the fact that Meckler's attorney writes run-on sentences that would make William Faulkner weep with jealousy, how does knowing about the squirrel make it their fault?

Apparently it's because mall personnel "encouraged the squirrel to remain on the premises by feeding and caring for the squirrel, despite the dangerous conditions that arose from allowing said animal to remain on the premises."

Squirrel: Dude, do you mind if I crash here for a while? My house smells like cinnamon rolls.

Music festival finds tiny Rothbury on the map

From Woodstock, N.Y., to Indio, Calif., rock-and-roll has a long tradition of turning sleepy, out-of-the way locales into rock meccas.

Next in line could be tiny Rothbury,Michigan, which is set to host a massive rock festival over the July 4 weekend.

More than 70 artists and bands -- including the Dave Matthews Band, Widespread Panic, John Mayer, 311, Modest Mouse, Snoop Dogg and Primus -- will play Rothbury, a four-day rock festival July 3-6 at the Double JJ Ranch & Golf Resort. The town of Rothbury -- which at last count had a population of less than 500 -- lies about six miles inland from Lake Michigan and about 24 miles north of Muskegon.

Concert promoters and Grant Township officials finalized festival plans late Tuesday.

Pakistan blocks YouTube for 'blasphemous' content: officials

An inter-ministerial committee has decided to block YouTube because it contained "blasphemous content, videos and documents," a government official told AFP.

"The site will remain blocked till further orders," he said.

Other officials said the site had been blocked because it contained controversial sketches of the Prophet Mohammed which were republished by Danish newspapers earlier this month.

One major service provider, Micronet, said in an email to subscribers that the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority had directed all ISPs to block access to YouTube "for containing blasphemous web content/movies."

"Meanwhile Internet users can write to YouTube.com to remove the objectionable web content/movies because this removal would enable the authorities to order un-blocking of this website," the email said.

TurboTax, TaxCut court Mac users with new versions

Good news, tax procrastinators—since this is a leap year, you have an extra day to put off filing your 2007 taxes. The bad news, of course, is that even with 24 more hours to table your taxes, you'll still have to finish the job eventually—that April 15 deadline isn't going anywhere.

With February soon giving way to March and bringing us another calendar page flip closer to the filing deadline, it's time to pick a program for preparing your tax return. Fortunately, the makers of tax-preparation products have updated their offerings to reflect this year's ever-changing tax laws and to add features aimed at making this annual chore more efficient.

For Mac users, the leading providers of tax-prep software are Intuit, with its TurboTax product line, and H&R Block, which makes TaxCut.

New on Amazon's Shelves: Storage for Startups

EC2 lets its customers quickly start up a virtual computer in the "cloud" -- industry slang for data centers around the world -- then use it as a Web server or for crunching data and shut it down just as fast.

"I don't need to have a systems administrator or a network administrator," said Chief Executive Chris Gay. "I don't have to worry about hardware becoming irrelevant."

Gay said he also uses Amazon's online payments service and is evaluating its data storage and simple database services. During the first dot-com boom, he said, "It was a badge of strength to have as much as possible in house.

"Now, unless that is your core business...it's a liability."

Adam Selipsky, vice president of product management and developer relations for Amazon Web Services, said Amazon wants entrepreneurs to focus on their ideas, not on hardware leases and crashing servers.

MTB News and Notes: A conversation with Greg Minnaar; New power at ...

It's been a roller coaster year for Greg Minnaar.

The South African downhiller opened the season riding his country's Absa Cape Epic as a celebrity participant in the mixed team category (he finished fourth). Minnaar then spent the 2007 World Cup season nipping at the heels of reigning world champ Sam Hill. But a badly timed shoulder dislocation suffered while training in France, Germany derailed his campaign. Seemingly recovered, Minnaar looked to be capable of dethroning Hill at the World Cup round at Mont-Ste-Anne, Quebec, and at the world championships in Fort William, Scotland. But in both races Minnaar's shoulder painfully popped out of the socket midway through the run, forcing the South African to cool his jets. In Fort William, Minnaar hit the deck after his shoulder dislocated, breaking his shoulder blade.

Dial "P" for "Pander"

3:35 A.M.--The Trouble with Dials: Despite lots of dismissive punditry--It's a cliche! Badly executed! And look at Obama's swift response!--Hillary's "3 AM" ad appears to have worked. Intriguingly, the ad also worked despite performing poorly in the MediaCurves.com sample of 554 Democrats hooked up to reaction meters (on which they registered their agreement or disagreement).

Which seems to demonstrate a problem I've always had with Frank Luntz-style "dial" groups: The meters measure the voter's visceral reaction to whatever the candidate is saying. If the voter hates abortion, and Candidate A attacks abortion, the meter goes up. If the voter is pro-choice, the meter goes down. What the meter doesn't capture is actual rumination--even fleeting doubts or flashes of confidence.
